The Manhunter

Here’s the September 7-13, 1974, TV Guide “Fall Preview” write-up about The Manhunter, a Wednesday night CBS action-drama starring Ken Howard as Dave Barrett, an ex-Marine—recently returned to the States from China—who is establishing himself during the Depression-era 1930s as a private eye-cum-bounty hunter. The show debuted on September 11, 1974, and lasted only a single season, its 22nd and final episode airing March 5, 1975. Also below is a 1974 CBS promo spot for The Manhunter.

Movin’ On

Below you’ll find the September 7-13, 1974, TV Guide “Fall Preview” write-up about Movin’ On, an hour-long NBC-TV road drama starring Claude Akins and Frank Converse as long-haul truck drivers who get involved in the lives of people they encounter during their commercial travels. The show’s theme song was written and performed by Merle Haggard. Movin’ On continued for two seasons, before being cancelled in 1976.

Paper Moon TV Series

Below you will find the September 7-13, 1974, TV Guide “Fall Preview” write-up about Paper Moon, a half-hour, Friday night series based on the 1973 historical film of that same name (which was, in turn, based on Joe David Brown’s 1971 novel Addie Pray). Father-daughter pair Ryan and Tatum O’Neal had starred in the movie, but it was Christopher Connelly and Jodie Foster who took their places in this ABC-TV series, which lasted only 13 episodes before being cancelled in January 1975.

O’Hara, United States Treasury

Below you will find the TV Guide “Fall Preview” write-up about O’Hara, United States Treasury (aka O’Hara, U.S. Treasury), the 1971–1972 CBS-TV series starring David Janssen. A Jack Webb production, O’Hara premiered on Friday, September 17, 1971, and ran for 22 regular episodes before being cancelled. It was the third series in which Janssen starred, following Richard Diamond, Private Detective (1957–1960) and The Fugitive (1963–1967), and preceding Harry O (1974–1976).

R.I.P., Bill Withers

Very sad news today: “Bill Withers, who wrote and sang a string of soulful songs in the 1970s that have stood the test of time, including ‘Lean On Me,’ ‘Lovely Day’ and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ has died from heart complications, his family said in a statement to The Associated Press. He was 81.

“The three-time Grammy Award winner, who withdrew from making music in the mid-1980s, died on Monday in Los Angeles, the statement said. His death comes as the public has drawn inspiration from his music during the coronavirus pandemic, with health care workers, choirs, artists and more posting their own renditions on 'Lean on Me' to help get through the difficult times.”
