Dr. No, 1971

There have been many editions of Ian Fleming’s 1958 novel, Dr. No, published over the last five decades, in both hard- and soft covers. But one of my favorites had got to be Bantam’s 1971 paperback edition, with a sexy, stylish cover illustration by Frank McCarthy, who did the artwork for several James Bond titles during the late 1960s and early ‘70s. McCarthy’s front for Goldfinger is particularly well-remembered, because it offered an uncommon (at least for the U.S. market) bit of nudity. However, his original painting for Dr. No--featured below--was no less eye-popping.
