New York magazine, August 19, 1996

One of my favorite magazine covers of all time is this one from the August 19, 1996, edition of New York. At the time, Republican Senator Bob Dole was running for president against incumbent Democrat Bill Clinton. Using this photo of Dole dozing off, and thereby suggesting that he wasn’t aware that his campaign was tanking in the polls, was a stroke of brilliance. Unfortunately, it may also have helped cost the magazine’s editor, Kurt Anderson, his job.

His head was lowered as a Priest offered a prayer before a Republican fundraiser. That's how I remember it, when I took this picture. :)
