Author Harold Q. Masur’s interest in making his series protagonist, Scott Jordan, a combination of the ingenious lawyer Perry Mason and Nero Wolfe’s “insouciant” legman, Archie Goodwin, created confusion among paperback illustrators, who imagined the character rather too literally as “Sam Spade with a law degree.”
